Subway to Launch a Vegan Meatball Marina in the UK

Sandwich Chain to Launch Trial in Selected Stores

Subway the popular chain has joined forces with Beyond Meat to bring the meatless meatball marina to the UK, thereby continuing its venture into the vegan market. It has this week released the new plant-based offering to certain UK outlets in another obvious sign of the expanding vegan trend.

The meatless meatballs have been popular in the USA for some time now. It will be on trial for a few weeks in Birmingham and Manchester. In this respect, Subway is taking its lead from IKEA whose traditional Swedish meatball dish has now been “veganized”.  

Subway has, of course, earlier this year introduced a vegan patty and salad sub. It describes the patty as “packed full of delicious sweet peppers, red onions, spinach, garlic and chilli.” Almost every Subway window has had for most of this year a poster in the window promoting this with the word “vegan” prominently displayed. It is one of the more obvious signs on the High Street of the continuing vegan trend. 

A growing list of plant-based high street meat makeovers

So the Subway Meatless Meatballs now joins the ever-growing list of popular plant-based meat makeovers on the High Street. It joins the Greggs vegan sausage roll, the KFC imposter burger and the Burger King impossible burger. McDonald’s is also coming to the party a little later.

While Subway UK has not revealed too many details about the launch Vegan Food Uk said on its Instagram page that the meatless meatball marinara will be available until 20 November. It seems likely that there will be a nationwide rollout of the product in 2020, assuming that the pilot is a success. Greggs was famously stunned by the success of its pilot launch of the vegan sausage roll, so since the vegan trend shows no sign of slowing down the smart money is on a nationwide rollout.  

It will be interesting to see if the chain offers vegans a plant-based cheese to top the marina sandwich. The US version included real cheese as a default offering. 

Subway’s marketing describes the new meatless sub as being “drenched in our irresistible marinara sauce, sprinkled with grated parmesan cheese and perfectly toasted, but features the first-ever Beyond Meatball created just for Subway. The sub offers the same mouthwatering flavour as Subway’s traditional meatball sub and is packed with protein – 24 grams per six-inch sub”.
