Go Vegan !!!
The Vegan Trend is going Mainstream
Evidence of the burgeoining vegan trend is everywhere, and unsurprisingly this constitues the biggest category on Vegans Be The Change.
We report on some of the news stories that show how all-embracing this trend is now becoming.
Vegan Activism
There are countless ways of being an animal activist and vegan advocate. Just being a personal witness is in itself powerful. Some decide to protest in the streets, in the supermarket aisles and outside the local butchers. Some go out and about talking to people, challenging their positions and uploading the resulting conversations onto You Tube. There is no one size fits all.
We report on some of the more interesting, unusual, effective, entertaining and sometimes even surreal efforts at advocacy.
Animal Welfare
The issue of animal welfare is central to the philosophy of veganism. The bottom line is this: eating meat means eating a dead animal that was slaughtered in order for you to eat and to stimulate your taste buds. This is an uncomfortable truth for many of us to confront. Is this ethical? Do we have the moral right to exercise dominion over animals to do this? If we do, then can we really accept the methods of modern industrial farming? Do we know what they are? Why are they so often hidden from view?
We report on some of the stories that cut to the heart of the issues surrounding animal welfare.
Is being Vegan Healthy?
If you are asking yourself whether or not a vegan diet is the best of all possible diets for your health, then the truth is that there’s a lot of debate. Put ten different nutritionists in a room and you might get ten different opinions. But the vegan diet does most definitely regularly out perform many other diets on many measurements. There is much evidence to suggest that eating more plant-based foods is good for your health.
We report on some of the studies and social trends which speak to this growing conversation.
The Dairy Industry
So many people remain in the dark about the workings of the dairy industry. Much of what happens in dairy farms happens behind closed doors, and the realities of these farms is beginning to become common knowledge.
We report on the difficulties of the dairy industry and the activists who are determined to shine a light on dairy practices.
How Veganism (or the lack of it) affects our Environment
There are many studies that conclude that our environment would be a lot better off if more people eschewed animal produce and meat in particular. One hundred and seven scientists working on the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have in a major report claimed that the West’s high consumption of meat and dairy is a major factor in climate change.
We report on some of the studies, reports, documentaries and news items that shine a light on the enviromental impact of industrial farming, and how the consumption of meat contributes to the world’s environmental problems.
Vegan Ethics & Morality
Veganism takes a moral stand: that the exploitation and harming of animals is wrong, and that animals should not be treated as commodities. The terms “ethical vegan” or “moral vegan” is often applied to those who in addition to following a vegan diet also oppose the use of animals for any purpose. We seek to explore the ethical issues that arise when we discuss veganism with non-vegans: the resistances that come up, effective ways of communicating and the sense of unease when people feel the disconnect. There are a myriad of ways in which cognitive dissonance can sometimes arises.
We look at some of the news stories that bring out these issues.
Legal Issues & Animal Law
There is a growing body of law relating to how humans should as a matter of human rights be protected for beliefs relating to the treatment of and, in particular, the eating of animals. Vegans are beginning to acquire the rights of a protected minority whose beliefs are to be respected.
A body of animal law is developing in jurisprudence. The law in respect of animal protection and cruelty is based on statutory and case law as it relates to companion animals, wildlife and animals used in entertainment, research and ones raised for food.
We report on stores that relate to this interesting and developing area.
